Competitive Parametric Analysis of Confl icts between Functional and Cost Parameters of Engineering Systems

We analyzed contemporary and historical numeric data concerning the evolution of multiple engineering systems (e.g. personal computers and their components: CPU, printers, monitors; digital photo cameras; smartphones; aircrafts; cars), totally using the data about ca. 35,000 particular products taken from dozens of sources. As a result of the analysis, we derived three measurable criteria of particular parameters that allow evaluation of their effect on the competitive ability of products in a given market: level of their variation, type of distribution (e.g. one-humped, two-humped, random) and correlation with market prices of bestselling products. On the basis of these criteria, we specify fi ve categories (developing, optimal, segmenting, excessive and neutral parameters), describe typical tendencies of their changes and suggest a simple formal (non-expert) approach to attribution of particular parameters to these categories. We also consider complex parameters that quantitatively aggregate the impacts of particular parameters in competitive ability of products. A formal statistical criterion of applicability of these complex parameters in decision-making is presented.
