Abstract. Almost every fifth Russian citizen has a criminal record and this percentage
continues to grow. The research demonstrates a possible connection between the commission of crimes and self-perception of convicts and their perception of the world; further study of this connection can help minimise the risk of repeated crime. The study involved 25 convicts and 25 respondents in the control group aged 25 to 40 years. Several tests have been used: “The Impact of Event Scale” by M.D. Horowitz, “Methodology for the Study of Self-Attitude” by S. Pantileev, “Methodology for the Study of Personal Identity” by L.B. Schneider, the “Life Satisfaction Index” test adapted by N. Panin, “Internal-External Locus of Control Scale” by J. Rotter, the Ryff Scale of Psychological Well-Being. This research shows the connection between the traumatic experience and violation of perception of oneself and the world, and the connection of these violations with the commission of criminal acts.
Keywords: commission of crimes, mental trauma, self-perception and perception of the world
