The article is devoted to the 150th anniversary since the birth of Jean Sibelius, and explores the history of perception of his music in Russia, as reflected in the publications of the largest Russian music periodical, “The Russian Music Newspaper” (late 19th —
early 20th centuries). The article traces the legacy of Sibelius’s work and the reasons of his popularity among Russian listeners.
