The paper is devoted to the practical experience of teaching Russian to American students at the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences of Saint Petersburg State University. The authors describe the student body and their typical diffiulties in studying the Russian language within the language environment. The system of teaching grammar, writing, reading, listening and translation from English into Russian, goals and tasks of courses, skills and abilities that are formed in the course of training are considered in detail. The paper includes examples of teaching plans for students with different language profiiency levels, describes the types of classroom and home tasks and the system of control and evaluation.
