The initial period of the Russian theatre art development provides necessary
information for understanding dramatic verse as a phenomenon. It also gives rich
material for studying the historical development and changes in the acting art methods
on the Russian stage. It is necessary to analyse the broad context: to consider carefully
historical, social, aesthetic and cultural factors, to know the historical features of
the existence and development of the Russian language, to take into account the
peculiarities of Russian versification. The article traces the historical development of
Russian dramatic poetry from raesnik (archaic folk verse drama), through syllabic,
syllabic-accentual versification of the 17th–18th centuries to dramatic verse of the
19th century in works by A. S. Griboedov and A. S. Pushkin. The author of the paper
also considers the term “dramatic verse”, describes its content and views the history of
its study and application in acting practice.
