The article covers the anthropological concept of Benedict Spinoza explaining the
mechanism of affects’ appearance and their specificity in the complex emotional world
of man. In the context of Spinoza’s naturalistic anthropology, the starting point of
understanding the affect theory is a statement that man is endowed by nature with a
life instinct and this law is manifested in body conditions that Spinoza called affects.
Interacting with the objective world, a soul undergoes great emotional changes. In this
regard, Spinoza provides a philosophical understanding of an individual’s being, which
is largely determined by desires and passions.
Key words: affect, passion, soul, body, desire, rationality.
