The purpose of the article is to consider the first Chinese “model revolutionary opera”
“The Legend of the Red Lantern” as a phenomenon of politised art of the period of the
Cultural Revolution and also as a phenomenon of the new synthetic style which unites
the features of traditional Beijing opera and European theater. The attention is focused
on the history of the performance creation which became a standard of the musical
and theatrical genre, meeting the spirit of the new power, on the analysis of the biased
criticism, and also on the formation of the “model revolutionary performance” concept.
