During the existence of the state of Atabegs (Eldiguzids) in 1136–1225, which was the most powerful state in the history of Azerbaijan, Nakhchivan was its main governance centre. From 1146 till 1161 Nakhcivan was the main power centre, and in 1161–1225 it was only one of these main centres. Paying attention to the strategic and geographical position of the area, Eldiguzids developed towns, strengthened fortresses, and improved the economy. The work “Nozhat ol-Gholub” by Hamdullah Mustawfi Qazwini is one of the sources of historical geography of the medieval Caucasus and Azerbaijan. In the 7th chapter H. Qazwini tells about the cities of Azad, Kiran, Ordubad, Aylis, and Julfa, fortresses of Alinja, Surmari, Taghmar, and Fagnan and the capital Nakhchivan, and also gives information about the governance of the cities, the economy development, and trade roads. The author of the article considers four
fortresses of Nakhchivan mentioned by the 14th-century historian.
