The article is devoted to the legal nature of the concepts of mergers and acquisitions. The definitions of these terms fixed in the law of the Russian Federation and the European Union are considered and their comparative characteristics are given. The article also reveals the problems in defining the essence of mergers and acquisitions. Based on the conducted research, the author proposes an alternative interpretation of the specified terms.
