The short stories by H. H. Munro can be divided into several groups according to their
subject-matter (social satire, mystic-romantic, and military) and narrative types (“direct
narration”, “complicated narration”, “volition”). The dominant narrative type of the military short stories is “volition”, which is characterised by the use of different stylistic devices in the intensifying function. These points can be illustrated with the help of the short story “The Cupboard of the Yesterdays”.
