The origins and preconditions for the fl ower-and-bird genre forming in Chinese art are
analysed in the paper in terms of the split of painting into genres in the Tang Dynasty era. The features of this genre and the peculiarities of its development during the reign of the Tang (618–907) and Song (960–1279) Dynasties are also considered.
