The article reveals the culturological theme of the evolution of ancient Russian culture
from the end of the 11th century till the middle of the 13th century, the so-called pre-
Mongol period. The author presents this era as the fi rst Golden Age under the sign of the Byzantine infl uence, rightly pointing to the huge role of the Russian Orthodox Church in the formation of Russian culture and the adoption of the cultural wealth of Byzantium.
