The article is devoted to the origin of historicism in the European and Russian
philosophy, which became one of the main directions of philosophical thought in the
19th century and largely determined the development of the European culture of that
time. Historicism of Russian philosophers was refl ected in their hypotheses about further ways of architectural creation in Russia after the dominance of the classicism aesthetics had receded into the past, and the idea of Russia’s special historical place initiated the search for a national architectural style, one of the main directions in the development of Russian architecture of the eclecticism epoch.
