The problem of historical consciousness was analysed in foreign and Russian philosophy from the ontological, gnoseological and axiological positions. However, the existing ambiguity of this category in some ways complicates its understanding. For a more clear idea about the nature, content and specifics of the “historical consciousness” category we should follow its history. It helps us to clarify how the “historical consciousness” notion originated, which steps it went through in its development and how it is represented in the philosophical thought nowadays.
