The paper is aimed to reveal N. Gogol’s understanding of good and evil. The theme
of the fight of good and evil in a human heart is analysed on the basis of the patristic
doctrine. Special attention is paid to the ontological aspect of good and evil helping to
determine good as a substantial ontological reality of human existence and evil as an
anti-ontological, anti-substantial reality. The paper describes Gogol’s views on the issue of the distinction between good and evil complicating a man’s moral choice. The author comes to a conclusion that, from the viewpoint of Gogol, perception of the essence of evil is a pledge of victory of good over evil and a beginning of a person’s moral improvement.
