In Moscow suburbs there are small provincial towns that have been preserving their
historical identity and special atmosphere of antiquity over years. The city of Yegoryevsk
is among them. Town guests get a feeling that they are in “the past” – the merchant
environment of the 19th century. Among the chief peculiarities of this district center
is a clear plan of straight streets and blocks of historic buildings where textile factories,
parks, churches and mansions of citizens of the 19th century are found side by side. The provincial town owes a great deal to the local merchants, nobles and industrialists, because the growth of factory production gave funds for the urban infrastructure improvement.
Key words: industrial bourgeoisie, industrial centre, social and cultural development,
family business.
