The author investigates the demographic problems of the municipal unit in the Nizhny
Novgorod region. Through the analysis and evaluation of the statistical material, it is
revealed that the demographic component, along with the natural, economic and
environmental ones, is the most important element and simultaneously an indicator
of sustainable and balanced development of any territorial entity. The author provides
a complex assessment of the demographic situation and demographic zoning of
the investigated territory and proposes ways to overcome the accumulated negative
demographic trends.
