Strategy and tactics of verbal communication, discourse rituals and norms, rules for conducting a conversation may vary in different cultures. This statement is equally true for various verbal acts, which may very often be culturally biased. Linguistic competence alone is not suffi cient to master the norms of foreign language communication. In order to form adequate systemic insight into another language and culture in its entirety it would be necessary to employ the cognitive level of conscience. Comparison of another language and culture with one’s own native language system,
understanding their similarities and differences is an important prerequisite for overcoming the mother tongue interference and engaging in effective cross-cultural communication.
