Word Form vs. Paradigm (Based on the Russian Language Material)

B. Yu. Norman
Price: 50 руб.
Word form as a vehicle (representative) of the grammatical meaning is a part of the word-changing paradigm. However, typical (basic) syntactic function of the word form establishes the basis for its “separation”. Such process which is understood in linguistics as a lexicalization, is illustrated in the article with examples of the Russian word forms, phrasal expressions such as “as a warning”, “in no uncertain terms”, “with deep regret”, “to the touch”. Internal confl ict between the whole paradigm and an individual word form is revealed. The article is based on dictionary data and the National Corpus of the Russian Language. As a result, the wholeness of a paradigm is defi ned as a virtual and relative characteristic. On the other hand, the incomplete paradigm serves as a means (tool) of explication of formal consolidation of its lexical meaning.
Keywords: word form, grammatical meaning, paradigm, lexicalization.
