The article is devoted to the artistic conceptualisation of the personality of Peter the Great in the novel “Peter and Alexey” by D. S. Merezhkovsky. Unlike I. Lazhechnikov, K. Masalsky and A. S. Pushkin who represented Peter the Great only from the positive side in their works, D. S. Merezhkovsky gives the fist Russian emperor not only positive but also negative characteristics in the novel “Peter and Alexey” for the fist time in Russian literature.
Key words: Russian emperor, Peter’s transformations, one-sided representation, artistic
conceptualisation, critical rethinking.
