The article is devoted to the structural peculiarities of the so-called extended medical
metaphors in the German mass media. The main characteristic parameters of extended
metaphors are the following: the quantitative parameter (the number of links in a
metaphorical chain), the consecution of the metaphor components and the grade of its
completeness. Met in diffrent media sources, an extended metaphor is a special kind of
the phenomenon under consideration, because due to the high semantic compression it promotes the successful realisation of the main functions of the mass media: informative, didactic and suggestive ones.
