Images of the Russian Ballet in Small-Scale Sculpture (Late 19th Century – 1930s)

Relevance of synthesis and reciprocity of the plastic arts genres in the late 19th century until 1930s was caused by the remarkable rise of ballet. Soaring public interest in ballet resulted in the efforts by various artists to capture the essence and aesthetics of dance in various forms and genres through small-scale sculpture and plastic arts. The articles focuses on the interpretation of the dance theme in small scale sculpture, mainly porcelain, which became the most effective material for creating an artistic image. For the fi rst time ever, numerous pieces of art from the major museums
of Moscow and Saint Petersburg, as well as from foreign and private collections are analyzed in a comprehensive manner.
