Abstract. The article analyses the features of the iconic works of the Chinese artist
Wu Guanzhong, whose work signifi cantly infl uenced the development of oil painting in
China in the 20th and early 21st centuries. The artist’s work is considered in the context of
the infl uence of the European tradition on the development of Chinese painting. The emphasis is placed on the artist’s understanding of the traditional landscapes of China. The phenomenon of mixing painting traditions, which contributes to the formation of the artist’s
unique creative method, is explored.
