Abstract. This paper expresses an opinion on the part the English classroom may play in the development of soft skills. With the shift of the educational paradigm towards soft skills, a significant number of courses focusing on them have been introduced into the university curricula all over the world. Even though the English classroom seems to have considerable potential for honing soft skills, which is reflected in the updated issue of the CEFR, there are no standalone courses on soft skills in English. In this paper we point out that there is a long tradition of embedding tasks on developing some soft skills into the English language course and provide examples from various coursebooks. We argue that it is high time this gained experience was transformed into a standalone course in which English stops being a goal and becomes a means.
