Abstract. The article deals with the chamber vocal works of V. Shebalin, an outstanding
Soviet composer of the 1920–1930s. Exploring the stylistic genesis of the early period
of the composer’s work, the authors consider it in the context of the social and political
realities of the described historical period. The work considers the infl uence of the creativity of colleagues on Shebalin, his adherence to the Russian classical musical tradition and its implementation in the composer’s work. The principles of choosing poems and the genre sphere of their implementation are considered. The authors carefully consider the combination of the traditional and the innovative in Shebalin’s work, his attitude to the use of folklore.
