Abstract. The article is devoted to the 60th anniversary of the publication of the remarkable work by D. Rabinovich, one of the founders of Russian performing musicology. Rabinovich’s book “Portraits of Pianists” deals with the art of outstanding pianists of the Soviet era, who were the pride of Russian pianism – K. Igumnov, G. Neuhaus, V. Sofronitsky, S. Richter, E. Gilels, M. Grinberg and others. Rabinovich’s refl ections, artistic assessments and conclusions are considered in the article through the prism of modern aesthetic views. The relevance of the main provisions of Rabinovich’s work for the present is emphasised.
