Abstract. The development of the Arctic was not a priority for the Russian state for a long time. But at the end of the 17th century, artists began to take part in sea expeditions, and their works became the proof of the uniqueness of the nature of high latitudes. From the 18th to the 21st century, the fi gurative paradigm of the Arctic region in the visual arts was constantly changing. At the beginning of the 21st century, there was a need to identify and scientifi cally comprehend the spiritual and cultural features of the polar zone, which were directly refl ected in Russian art. The paper concludes that in Russian science there is a huge body of research papers on the image of the Arctic in art, but their systematisation and determination of their place in the development of Russian art are required. In addition, the authors suggest clarifying the geography of the Arctic region, its regions and separating the concepts of the Far North and the Arctic, as well as the art of the Arctic and northern art. The level of study on the evolution of the Arctic image in the visual arts is considered from the point of the integrated approach. Reviewing the Russian scientifi c literature, the authors used theoretical methods
of the integrated approach (analysis, comparison, generalisation) and system analysis.
