Abstract. Based on the contextual analysis, the article considers the problematic and thematic structure of F. M. Dostoevsky’s rough sketch “On the Petrushka Folk Theatre” from the Writer’s Diary for January 1876. The article shows that the context of the rough sketch includes biographical, literary, theatrical and historical plans. Due to their comprehension and correlation, the author of the article reveals the sketch’s central theme of the Russian people and the problem of their unity in the 1870s when Russia embarked on the bourgeois- capitalist path of development. It is concluded that F. M. Dostoevsky’s attention is focused on the conditions that oppose the modern trends of the people’s loss of basic values and contribute to their unity in the new historical conditions.
