Abstract. Metaphor is a universal technique used by a person to coin and verbalise mental constructs of different ontological status. A creative mind coins special fi ctional entities whose peculiarities contradict norms of extralinguistic reality. Such made up entities are a must for the fi ctional worlds of fantasy books. Thus, the author has to coin names for new concepts and transform semantic structure of traditional vocabulary units in his/her wordbuilding activity. Unbelievable metaphoric concepts and their names have three functions in the text: they serve classifi cation, world modelling and nomination.
