Lu Xun was an outstanding Chinese writer, whose work had a significant impact on the development of literature and socio-political thought of China in the fi rst half of the 20th century. Lu Xun made a great contribution to the development of book graphics in China, becoming known as the “father of the new Chinese wood engraving”. This paper attempts to highlight the activity of Lu Xun in the fi eld of book design in China, as well as to understand its signifi cance for the development of the art of book illustration in the twenties and thirties of the 20th century. The goal of this paper is to study the process of birth of the new wood engraving in China and the directions of its further development,
as well as to characterize the role of Lu Xun in this process.
