The paper offers a new look at the transformation of the meaning of the word “prelude”, which was put forward in the XIX century by F. Chopin and gave birth to a rich tradition in Romantic and PostRomantic music. This etymological paradox, however well-known, has not yet been discussed as such. Meanwhile, traditionally, the prelude was thought of only as an introduction to another composition or event. Analyzing the inherent unity of the prelude with what followed it as a musical refl ection of the harmony of Feeling and Reason, the Elements and Order, in the emancipation of the prelude the authors tend to see a symptom of the destruction that happened to the integrity of the inner world of a human.
Keywords: F. Chopin, prelude, etymology, paradox, Feeling and Reason, harmony, transformation of meaning.
