The paper is devoted to the romance music of Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka (1804–1857). Although now you can fi nd a lot of literature about the life and work of the composer, most of the studies are related to his operas. A number of musicological works are also devoted to lyrical songs. However, the author’s goal is to clarify some aspects of the music composed by the founder of this genre in Russia which have not been considered yet. To achieve this goal, the author solved a number of tasks, i.e. he described the main periods of writing romance by the great Russian composer, considered particular pieces of music, their features, place in the composer's heritage and in the history of Russian music.
