The article provides a philosophical analysis of the concept of immortality in prose and
poetry of J. L. Borges, its place and signi⌆cance in the writer’s work. The author of
the paper establishes the philosophical prototypes of Borges’s artistic images (cyclical
time, mirror, labyrinth, sleep); analyses the correlation of Borges’s artistic images and
relevant philosophical interpretations of the problem under consideration (philosophy of G. W. F. Hegel, A. Schopenhauer, M. Heidegger, modern biomedical ethics); describes
the ethical status of immortality, according to Borges. It is determined that the concept of
immortality is ethically revealed in the contradiction between the immortality of the soul
and physical immortality. The author comes to a conclusion that physical immortality,
according to Borges, is metaphysics of insanity, as opposed to the idea of the immortality of the soul in the context of the theory of cyclic time.
