The article discusses the historical period of the Anti-Japanese War in China (1937–1945), when art schools were evacuated to the western provinces. It describes the activities of educators-artists who studied national and folk traditions with the aim of “chinisation” of Western realistic painting and giving the national character to ornaments in decorative and applied art and design.
