At the fi rst stages of development, works of Chinese and Russian art had similar
features. This situation remained in place until the VI century A.D., when the paths of
Chinese and Russian art diverged. The peculiarities of Russian painting art consisted
in the creation of three-dimensional images in two-dimensional space, and the tradi-
tional art of Chinese painting developed along the way of using the plastics of lines,
expressing the content aspect in the image of objects and the essence of all traditional
Chinese painting. Completely different approaches to painting in Russia and China
and the mutual exchange and enrichment of the two cultures ensured that Russian art,
perceptive, in search of innovative ideas, was artistically nourished and drew inspira-
tion from the art of China. Russian empress Catherine II was very interested in the
mysterious Chinese painting, its exquisite decorative symbolism, which was followed
by the creation of the palace in the Chinese style. Traditional Chinese paintings were
often transferred to Russia through various channels thanks to the ministers of foreign
affairs, and this was especially active during the reign of the Qing dynasty emperors.
Due to the continuation of economic and cultural contacts and mutual exchanges,
the art of Russia and China tended to show a rational way of integration.
