The article is devoted to the modern status of the historically formed academic genre of sonata. Its active participation in the development and exploration of new substantive and thematic areas is shown. Another analytical vector is aimed at revealing the creative contacts of sonata with the art of past centuries, realised in the variety of neo-
tendencies dating back to the art of Baroque and early classicism. The dialogue of cultures of the West and the East is demonstrated by examples of Eastern themes in the works of Western authors and the appeal of Eastern composers to the purely European genre. The author considers the refraction of the ethnostyle paradigm in sonata and char-
acterises various forms of its manifestation. The author also discloses the actualisation of polystylistics in sonata as a new concept of artistic and creative thinking. The status of sonata is indicated in the focus of the transformations of the genre system in music of the 20th century.
