Reconstruction of Ritual Structure in the Modern Polish Anthropological Theatre: Euripides’ Play “Electra” (2004) Staged by the Centre for Theatre Practices “Gardzienice”

Based on the theoretical and practical works of the 1960-70s by Jerzy 
Grotowski, the creator of the “poor theatre” concept and paratheatre experi-
ments, the modern Polish anthropological theatre tries to create a brand-
new structure of the play using reconstruction of various ritual structures. 
Euripides’ play “Electra” (2004) staged by the Centre for Theatre Practices 
“Gardzienice”, run by V. Staniewski, served as the material for analysis of 
reconstruction methods for ancient singing and dance. The author draws 
conclusions about an impossibility to reconstruct directly the place of the 
spectator-participant in the director’s script of a ritual act. Staniewski uses 
an actor’s syncretic technique and archegestures for a maximal impact on a 
spectator’s perception, however, saturates the place with up-to-date political 
and social images which reduce the effect of the ritual interaction.
