The article is devoted to the topical problem – formation of regional identity of the population. The article analyses the theoretical approaches to the study of regional identity factors. This concept re垹ects the importance of the territory’s image for social selfdetermination of an individual. Cognitive elements including knowledge of geography,
culture, customs, traditions of the territory are of great importance. They form an idea of
the uniqueness of the region. This serves as a basis for creating an emotionally colored
image of the region. In modern society, images of cities and regions as a whole are
formed under the in垹uence of information technologies. The article presents the results
of the sociological study conducted in Togliatti and devoted to information sources about
the life of the city. According to the data obtained, the Internet takes the 밓rst place among them. The results of the survey demonstrate the relationship between the processes of formation of regional identity and creation of a positive image of the city in the Internet.
