The article describes the characteristics and the principles of the modular system of
teaching and concludes that it is sensible to build a course in general professional
English at the first stage of training at university based on the modular type. The modular organisation of teaching material contributes to the active use of the foreign language in all types of speech activities. The structure of the module is described and the content of the 4 modules of the course is given.
