The article presents an attempt to analyse the final essay in the context of modern
education quality benchmarks. The authors’ position is conditioned by understanding the integrative nature of this final attestation format, which should show not only disciplinary, but also personal and cognitive results of education. The analysis of existing requirements and mass practice of writing final essays became a basis for constructive pedagogical proposals. The author justifies the expediency of expanding the genre diversity for this form of writing. Preparation for an essay is described in the context of students’ design and research activity as a component of individual learning paths.
