The article is devoted to the study of patriotism as a special phenomenon that forms
the basis of the Russian mentality. Patriotic education of citizens and the younger
generation is now among the most important activities of the Russian state. However,
we should not lose sight of the fact that representatives of different social groups of the
Russian society invest today different meanings to the terms “patriot” and “patriotism”.According to the authors, contradictions in the understanding of basic value
formulated in the media more often come from the liberal elite, which understand
the meaning of the word “patriotism” in an original way. The authors of the articl
thoroughly examine the statements of the liberal media and the Russian intelligentsia
The examples clearly prove that today the word “patriotism” is increasingly negative
and love of country has to assume its constant criticism. The authors illustrate thi
provision through the example of the controversy around the TV channel “Rain” an
“Olympic Games 2014”.
