The problems of optimal definition and classification of translation errors in the translation quality assessment (TQA) process are considered in the paper. Formally, translation errors are criteria of TQA. However, the modern translation theory has no acknowledged definition of a “translation error”. In addition, all error typologies exciting today are unproductive for precise assessment. The issue of selecting TQA criteria obviously needs a new approach.
