Abstract. The article deals with the issue of the evolution of textural space in the music of the Western European Middle Ages. The author reveals the main factors of the evolutionary transition from the archaic two-dimensional model of artistic space to a three-dimensional, perspective one. The author’s attention is focused on the intonational-modal, rhythmic and textural aspects of the medieval genres of Gregorian chant, organum and gymel.
