From Peredvizhniki to Avant-Garde Art — a Study on Russian Music Painting

The fi rst chapter of this paper is an overview of the development of early Russian painting, i.e. the transition from the Byzantine culture since the Principality of Kiev to the transformation of the arts during Peter the Great’s Europeanization reform, and the fi nal process of national identity awakening. At the early development stage of Russian music painting, the historical background and motives of the Peredvizhniki movement can be clarifi ed through sorting out the content of this chapter. In the second chapter, the paper has launched a general discussion on Russian critical realism painting and its Peredvizhniki genre, exemplifi ed by two representative artists I. I. Levitan (1861–1900) and I. E. Repin (1844–1930). The author has analyzed techniques of reproducing the “sound” contained in the artwork. The third chapter presents the analysis and study on music painting in Russian avant-garde art, exemplifi ed by two artists W. W. Kandinsky (1866–1944) and M.Z. Chagall (1887-1985) as the main research objects.
