The article introduces a study of the relationship between narcissistic personality traits
and altruistic attitudes of medical residents (N=141). Two factors that explained the
variability of narcissistic traits were identified: “egoism in interpersonal relationships”
and “grandiosity”. It was found that the “egoism in interpersonal relationships” factor
reduces altruistic attitudes, and the factor “grandiosity” increases them. Gender was also
identified as a predictor of altruistic attitudes of medical residents – women were more
prone to altruistic behavior than men.
Keywords: altruism, altruistic attitude, narcissism, narcissistic personality traits,
helping behaviour.
