The musical traditions of Syria are deep and interesting, dating back to the era of
antiquity, linked with the national experience and the exchange of achievements with
foreign countries. This article examines the stages of formation and development of
professional music education in Syria. The last century has been characterised by many
different initiatives, starting from the opening of clubs and ending with the Higher
Institute of Music in Damascus and the Faculty of Music in Homs. The main tasks of
modernisation in the field of music education in Syria is professional training as well as
balance between traditional musical foundations and innovative European approaches.
