Social imagination helps a person to adapt to rapid changes, to feel his/her relevance in
the world, to maintain mental health. Social imagination includes the idea of oneself and
of society. However, it is quite difficult to assess how much a person thinks of himself/
herself in terms of society. A direct question about society and its role in the respond-
ent’s views can be answered in a formal way, without actually producing an opinion.
Therefore, the “utopia game” can be chosen as a tool for evaluating the “working” social
imagination. Using the example of essays by first-year students of different specialisa-
tions, it is shown that more than half of the respondents do not affiliate themselves with
any significant social group, therefore, they cannot experience the therapeutic effect of
experiencing group solidarity.
