The paper considers the origin of the professional choral art in China,
highlights the socio-cultural factors that infl uenced the features of its
development. The author shows that it is in mass choral songs, that
many features of new Chinese music, based on a special fusion of West-
ern and national musical traditions, are formed. The paper notes the
important contribution of professional musical education to the develop-
ment of choral art, as well as some trends of modern choral movement.
