The article gives a musicological analysis of the unknown in
Russia vocal cycle of the Chinese composer Ding Shande “Dianxi
Poems” (1984). The cycle praises the beauty of the Chinese
province of Yunnan. The poetic text and musical embodiment are
of great interest, because they combine national modal traditions
of pentatonism with modern European harmony innovations of
the 20th century. Of particular interest is the use of polymodal
tonalities in the last piece of the cycle named “Camellia”.
The music of this cycle can be interesting in the Russian cultural
space both to musicologists and performers.
