The article considers different types of variation of special set expressions of Old Russian texts — combinations with the ablative case of restriction. Variations of these combinations at the lexical, word-formation and syntactic levels of the language system are analysed. It is noted that the very presence of the phenomenon of variation at different language levels of both individual components of the combination with the abla-
tive case of restriction and the whole combination suggests that the studied structures gradually lost their stability as they approached their current state.
